Salsa
is rooted in the Caribbean, Latin and North America. The basic movement common
across most salsa styles is to step quick-
quick-slow over a 4 beat measure.
Typically the quick steps are on beats one
and two, and the slow step is on three.
Beat four is used to transfer weight slowly,
or in some styles a tap or kick.

Cha Cha Cha
is a Latin American dance but has evolved
into European and North American styles. Steps should be taken first with the ball of
the foot on the floor, with the heel lowering when the weight is fully transferred.
Step left-right-left or right left right, and it
feels like it sounds. Say the word cha-cha-
cha
and match your steps to your words.
A cha-cha can be a transitional step
between two longer directional steps.
Try stepping to side with your right foot,
in place with your left, and then a cha-cha-
cha (R-L-R) before you do the other side
step to your left.

Merengue
This happy, joyful rhythm originates from the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The two-step beat requires bent knees slightly left and right to allow the hips to move left and right. Although the tempo of the music may be frantic, the upper body is kept majestic and turns are slow, typically four beats/steps per complete turn.

Cumbia
Cumbia is believed to be a variant of the African Guinean cumbe that developed into the folkdance of Colombia. This courtship
ritual was performed by women waving their long skirts and holding a candle, while the
men danced behind them, with one hand on his back and the other holding his hat. One
leg steps front to back, accentuating the hips, while the other leg remains in place.

Flamenco
grew out of native Andalusian, Islamic, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures of Spain,
and uses emotional sweeping of the arm, vigorous movements, such as hand-clapping and foot-stamping. In addition to the percussion provided by the heels and balls
of the feet striking the floor, castanets are sometimes held in the hands and clicked together rapidly to the rhythm of the music.

Belly
Bellydancing is a Western name for an
Arabic style developed in the Middle East. Most of the basic steps are circular motions isolated in one part of the body; for example,
a circle parallel to the floor isolated in the
hips or shoulders. Accents using “pop and lock” where a dancer either shimmies or makes a striking motion in the shoulders or hips are common, as are feats of flexibility
and rolling one’s belly muscles.
