WHAT DRIVES US TO DANCE?
What is it about music that makes us want to move to it?
Some say listening to the beat of a drum subconciously reminds
us of our first prenatal experience with sound...the heartbeat.
Remember in Dirty Dancing when Patrick Swayze tells Baby that
learning the steps aren’t enough, it’s a feeling....a heartbeat, as he
taps his heart? Cheesy, but true...the various rhythms we explore in
class are the “heartbeat” of the cultures they come from. It is all those
beautiful rhythms that drive us Zumba-lovers to connect to the world,
to each other and to ourselves through dancing.
NEW STUDENTS!
Welcome! A common concern for new students is the immersion style
format in which Zumba is taught. Zumba does not follow the standard
format of so many other dance fitness workouts. Most of us, myself
included, are used to 32 counts of step one, 32 counts of step 2, and so on.
That is precisely what makes Zumba so unique. We aim to connect to the
music; it is what drives the choreography. Our steps change in accordance
with the rhythm changes in each song, be it flamenco, salsa, etc. It may
take a couple classes to get used to learning this way, but with patience
and repetition, your muscles will learn the music. It doesn’t matter if you
have two left feet or you’re a world class samba champion, the desire to
move and have fun is all you need in Zumba!

tips
DRINK WATER!
Keeping yourself hydrated will help your endurance and circulation. Hydrate during workouts...you don't have to wait until the end of the song!
STRETCH!
Stretching regularly increases flexibility, range of motion, circulation and prevents injury.
PATIENCE! Some steps come easy, others may take a few classes. If at any point you feel lost, take out the arms and concentrate on the feet. Getting it down comes with repetition; the more you practice the more you burn! We do each song for about three weeks and rotate one or two new songs each week, so you can practice and try something new!
HAVE FUN!
The best way to improve physical fitness is to do an activity that is fun...so you don't get bored and quit two weeks later. This is the theory behind the Zumba movement...to create a workout that feels more like a party!
